Course

THE HEART OF AMERICA MARATHON COURSE went from Columbia to Fulton, basically on Route WW, for the first three years. In 1963 the course was changed to its present configuration except for the eight year period from 1982 to 1989 when the race became an October event with a finish on Faurot Field. On two of those October dates (1985 & '86) the River Road was flooded causing a course change which eliminated Easley Hill. However, those changes also deleted some nice downhill stretches in favor (disfavor?) of some rolling hills.

Until 1982 the start was on Providence Road. The start was adjusted from time to time as we went through the process of certification and recertification. During the October period the start was on Broadway, downtown, or at Stadium & College. When we went back to the Labor Day date in 1990 the start was fixed at its present location adjacent to the Hearnes Center.
